Lykke Li “Wounded Rhymes” (2011)

July 4, 2011

Lykke Li follows her charming and clever debut Youth Novels with seductive Wounded Rhymes. Just like a whole bunch of indie kids out there, she knows that the ’60s rule right now. To tell the truth, this trend suits her teenage drama perfectly. The first single called Get Some is brave with its lyrics like Don’t pull your pants before I go down (…) I’m your prostitute, you gon’ get some but ultimately feels flat. The opening Youth Knows No Pain explores similar territory (tribal drumming minus drone) yet the result is much better. In fact, Timotej Zachrisson regales us with the strongest tracks already at the beginning. I Follow Rivers has cool cowbells and simply enraptures. Love Out of Lust is a powerful ballad, its position on the tracklist is excellent. Best of all, however, is Sadness Is a Blessing. There is no other moment when Lykke Li comes so close to the listener. She is so vulnerable here yet her performance is unbelievably flawless, and all that without a feeling of falsehood or histrionics. The Scandinavian singer missteps few times but the overall impression is of one of the best albums of 2011. I love the cover image, too.
