Grimes “Geidi Primes” (2010)

July 6, 2011

Grimes is Claire Boucher and she has enough power to save pop music. Released on a cassette and limited to 30 copies (later as a free download), Geidi Primes manifest a rare talent. Obscure and primitive, these 11 tracks build a confusing landscape of beats, samples and Grimes’ attempts to play instruments (she has had no training). The most bewitching feature is Claire’s vocal: ghostly, volatile, inspiring. She can be everyone, from Chinese opera singer (Sardaukar Levenbrech) to Mariah Carey (Feyd Rautha Dark Heart). The standout is undoubtedly Rosa, a guitar ballad with some great drum beating and Grimes’ melancholic prayer for the next ice age. Listened to this dozens of times and can’t find a filler. It’s simply amazing she did so much on a debut album. It’s scary and fascinating to think what will come in the (near) future from this talented being.

hydrameter: 5/5

Key Tracks: Rosa, Sardaukar Levenbrech (but honestly, all of the tracks are equally superb)
