Hercules and Love Affair “Blue Songs” (2011)

July 14, 2011

Hercules and Love Affair are the people responsible for one of the greatest albums of 2008 and the best debut of that year. It’s not easy for me but I have to write it: this LP mostly sucks. It is such a step backwards that the band will have to make a masterpiece of their third release to erase this one from memory. Many will look Blue Songs‘ failure in the absence of Antony Hegarty who was the key factor to the success of Hercules. I’m afraid it’s not that simple. Or, wait, it is as the writing skills of Andrew Butler sadly have deteriorated. These Blue Songs are painfully mediocre and boring, tracks from seven to ten just hit rock bottom. Fortunately, there are two highlights: mysterious Painted Eyes and It’s Alright, a cover of Sterling Void which finds solace in music: And it’s gonna be alright / Cause the music plays forever on and on, and on, and on… Let’s hope we will find this group in better shape next time.

hydrameter: 2/5
