The Big Pink “Tapes” (2010)

July 26, 2011

Milo Cordell, a member of the British electro-rockers The Big Pink who took over the world in 2009 (well, almost) thanks to the extra-catchy single Dominos, has prepared a compilation for the German label !K7. A very good one. It’s focused on electronic music like dubstep or witch house with some notable exceptions. Moreover, there is no time for a break as the songs (surprisingly) peacefully merge into a long mix. Love Distance’s Move on the Rain is a short instrumental track with a train-like beat and happens to be quite hypnotic. Joker brings a Bond theme parody called Snake Eater. Hubble is one of Actress’ best moments, not only on his last album Splazsh. oOoOO guarantees some spookiness thanks to Mumbai. One of two bonus tracks is Tetanus Wine by Horse Macgyver, a song that has this mechanic feel and punch, yet is deeply melancholic. As I’ve mentioned before, there are some non matching elements here. Gang Gang Dance steal the show with not one but two fantastic tracks: the worldbeat Egowar from their third studio album God’s Money and an excellent remix of Velvet (The Big Pink’s only appearance on the record). jj’s tenderness of Let Go comes so unexpectedly that it’s almost like a shock. Imagine that it’s followed by SALEM’s Dirt… This Cordell, he’s a man with taste.

hydrameter: 4/5

Key Tracks: Dirt by SALEM, Egowar by Gang Gang Dance, Hubble by Actress, Let Go by jj, Move on the Rain by Love Distance, Mumbai by oOoOO, Snake Eater by Joker, Tetanus Wine by Horse Macgyver, Velvet (BDG Remix By Gang Gang Dance) by The Big Pink
