Erykah Badu “New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)” (2010)

July 30, 2011

Sequels aren’t better than their predecessors. Except for New Amerykah by Erykah Badu. Return of the Ankh is amazing and steady. Unlike 4th World War, Ankh is more introverted, this time it’s about loving, not fighting. What stays the same is Badu’s willingness for experimentation and embracing what is not evident. Don’t worry, you can find catchy tunes here: rhythmic Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long (check out the futuristic video now!) or sublime Window Seat. Of those more demanding songs I can recommend the magnificence of harp-driven Incense or epic but never boring Out My Mind, Just in Time. The only objection is that the record may feel out of focus but the pleasure of associating with this gem makes you sit quiet and listen without complaining.

hydrameter: 4/5

Key Tracks: 20 Feet Tall, Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long, Incense, Out My Mind, Just in Time, Window Seat
