Beach House “Teen Dream” (2010)

August 12, 2011

The third LP by dream pop duo Beach House is absolutely beautiful and deserves all the attention it has gained. Show me a list of last year’s best records without Teen Dream on it and I call it quits (Uncut doesn’t count, they shortlisted Teen Dream for the Uncut Music Award). All the elements harmonise: fantastic tunes, great lyrics and, of course, Victoria Legrand’s voice. Beach House know that it is their biggest asset and it should be exposed fully. The androgynous quality of her chant only makes it more intriguing and sexy. Norway is the obvious highlight: it starts where Silver Soul ends (that pipe organ!), then come the drums and you can hear that “ha-ha” by Legrand. It’s just the beginning but you’re already trapped by the song’s charm. Wait till you get to the finale. The lilting Zebra unveils a melancholic side, yet the song feels strong. Lover of Mine is like a swirl that gives calm instead of chaos. Lows are nowhere to be found. I should mention terrific artwork as well. And please don’t confuse this masterpiece with Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, ok?

hydrameter: 5/5

Key Tracks: Lover of Mine, Norway, Silver Soul, Walk in the Park, Zebra
