Cities Aviv “Digital Lows” (2011)

September 9, 2011

This is probably the first hip-hop record review I’m writing on hydra (excluding M.I.A.) and I couldn’t imagine a better start. Cities Aviv is a Memphis rapper whose intelligent production satisfies indie-pop listeners rather than average hip-hop fans. In other words, thankfully he’s got more in common with Toro Y Moi than 50 Cent. Not that his lyrics are subtle, just listen to his vitriolic flow in Fuckeverybodyhere (love the title). Tongue Kisser has a chopped female voice reminiscent of James Blake’s CMYK. Sixsixsixes kicks off with an apocalyptic chant and it’s even darker than Doom x Gloom. The album’s atmosphere is murky but all ends well with vivid Float On.

hydrameter: 4/5

Key Tracks: Float On, Fuckeverybodyhere, Sixsixsixes, Tongue Kisser
