tUnE-yArDs “w h o k i l l” (2011)

October 12, 2011

tUnE-yArDs produced that very good album by Thao & Mirah and appeared on the opening Eleven which also was the best track. Her second solo LP happens to be one of the most hailed releases of 2011. It’s definitely her year. w h o k i l l is multi-genre and clever. Think of some kind of music and I assure you it’s here. But what’s most important, the record does not feel messy. Live instruments dominate and what unites all 10 songs is Merrill Garbus’ voice. It is original, deep and, strangely, at some points she sounds like a reggae singer. Lyrics are weird but that should not come as a surprise. Highlights include Bizness and Gangsta which find tUnE-yArDs at the peak of her creativity and vocal skills. I find w h o k i l l captivating.

hydrameter: 3/5
